May 2009 Committee Report

CUPE P.E.I. Women’s Report

The CUPE P.E.I. Women’s Committee met on March 11th, 2009 at the CUPE P.E.I. office in Charlottetown. The meeting was very productive with information on CUPE P.E.I. Women’s Committee Mandate and Guidelines. The Committee Members discussed how to actively influence women’s issues in CUPE. To also work and support other labor women’s committees. The Committee also discussed a number of Resolutions and Constitutional Resolutions to put forth at the CUPE P.E.I. Convention. The Committee covered a lot of important information in one meeting. I feel as a Committee member, with the Mandate that was put forth, the CUPE P.E.I. Women’s Committee will be very interesting and active in accomplishing their goals.

Please join us for our Women’s Caucus at the CUPE P.E.I. Division Convention on May 14th, 2009.

Yours in Solidarity,

CUPE P.E.I. Women’s Committee Members

June 2008 Committee Report

Cupe's National Women's Committee met twice this year. Women's issues have been the topic of many discussions within CI"IPE in the last two years thanks to the work of the National Women's Taskforce.

The National Women's Committee will continue to work on the recommendations put forth by The Taskforce. The Committee met in July 2007 to prepare for the National Convention and then again in January 2008 to develop the workplan for the next two years. Priorities of the committee include; implementations of many of the Women's Taskforce recommentations around mentorship progftlms and union development, support the National Childcare working group with childcare issueso support the CLC's Womenos Economic Equality campaign, and to keep women's issues at the forefront when organizing and bargaining for all CUPE members.

On Prince Edward Island, I represented CUPE on the International Women's Day Committee. We had another successful event celebrating Women Environmental Leaders. Due to a busy fall with convention it was difficult to schedule a PEI women's Committee Meeting but the first will be held in April. I am looking forward to getting started. I am also looking forward to meeting with CUPE PEI Division to discuss the National Women's Committee priorities and the direction of the PEI committee. Recently I have been working on ge.tting the message of the new CLC's Women's Economic Equality Campaign out to all Island unions as this is my role with the Prince Edward Island Federation of Labour VP of Women's Issues.

It has been another enjoyable year of learning and I look forward to continuing to work on this committee over the next two years.
